This document summarizes the first set of themes identified by TG 4. It presents explorations of 15 themes including topics such as workforce diversity, emerging technologies, supply chain issues, climate change and many others. These explorations have been undertaken by TG 4 members as an information-gathering exercise, using existing materials written, developed, and published by experts in the respective subjects, both within ISO committees and in the wider world. Identifying and exploring emerging themes is an ongoing process. Thus, this document is evolving, and will be reviewed and updated regularly.

In August 2020, ISO/TC 283 has established its Developing Countries Coordination Group (DCCG) with the convenorship from Department Standard of Malaysia. Chaired by Maimunah Khalid with Haslayati "Lala" binti Hashim as convener support. The DCCG is intended to be a forum to encourage and support leadership development for TC 283 members from developing countries.

The Technical Committee and its Working Groups and Task Groups met in Kigali in October 2019 to continue their work on the ongoing development and maintenance of ISO 45001:2018 and supporting standards and guidance. 35 participating member countries, 5 Observer member bodies and 6 external Liaison bodies attended, with over 97 delegates involved in work around implementation of ISO 45001, psychological health and safety and many other issues.
The Next meeting of TC283 will be in Kigali, Rwanda 6-11 October
The Technical Committee and its Working Groups and Task Groups met in Dallas in March 2018 to continue their work on the ongoing development and maintenance of ISO 45001:2018 and supporting standards and guidance. 32 countries and over 80 delegates were involved in work around implementation of ISO 45001, psychological health and safety and many other issues.
The Technical Committee and Working Groups met in Coventry in September 2018 to begin their work on the ongoing development and maintenance of ISO 45001:2018 and supporting standards and guidance.
The Technical Committee and Working Groups meet in Dallas w/c March 4th 2019 to progress the development of ISO 45003 - Occupational health and safety management -- Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace -- Guidelines.
ISO has completed the publication of ISO 45001 and the standard is now available.
The FDIS ballot achieved 62 votes of approval, 4 votes of disapproval and 9 abstentions, so is now approved for publication as an International Standard.
The FDIS of ISO 45001 has been released for ballot today. The ballot will close on 25th January 2018.
The PC and its WG1 held meetings at the Pusat Rehabilitasi PERKESO (SOCSO Rehabilitation Centre) in Melaka, Malaysia during 18 to 23 September and agreed the need to go forward to the Final Draft International Standard stage
The results of the ballot indicated that 57 votes of approval, 7 votes of disapproval and 8 abstentions had been submitted; consequently the DIS has been approved and can now move forward to the next stage.
With the translation period having been completed, the ballot of ISO/DIS 45001.2 has now started.
The second Draft International Standard, DIS, of ISO 45001 has been sent to the national standards bodies for translation.
PC283 WG1 met in February 2017 and successfully completed the preparation of ISO DIS 45001.2.
ISO PC283 WG1 met n Klaipeda, Lithuania, to continue its review of the comment received on ISO/DIS 45001. It did not complete its task and has called another meeting.
Given the volume of remaining comments after the Toronto meeting, a separate Task Group met to prepare for the next Working Group 1 meeting.
On 6-10 June, 2016, 110 experts from 29 ISO member bodies and 9 liaison organizations met in Mississauga, Canada, to progress with the work on developing ISO 45001.
The ballot and commenting on the Draft International Standard (DIS) of ISO 45001 has ended.
On February 12 2016, the Draft International Standard (DIS) of ISO 45001 was sent out for vote and commenting. The comment period is ending on May 12.
On 21-25 September, 2015, more than 100 experts from 30 ISO member bodies and 10 liaison organizations met to progress with the draft international standard of ISO 45001. The meeting was held at the ILO premises in Geneva. The meeting made good progress in processing the comments and a new draft international standard was as a result produced.
The Task Groups from ISO/PC 283/WG1 met in Dublin to start processing the comments received during the ballot on ISO/CD45001.2

The Committee Draft of ISO 45001 <<Occupational health and safety management systems - Requirements with guidance for use>> has been released for a ballot among the "Participating" (or "P") members of ISO/PC 283.
Following its successful meeting in Casablanca, Morocco, ISO/PC 283 will soon be releasing ISO/CD 45001 for ballot.

Remembering our dearly departed colleagues...
Maimunah (Mai) Khalid
Our friend and colleague Ms Maimunah (Mai) Khalid of Malaysia passed away on the 1st of January 2025. Mai’s involvement with ISO's work on OH&S began prior to the formation of ISO/TC 283, through her membership of the project committee which developed ISO 45001:2018, with one of the final meetings in the development of the standard taking place in Malaysia. And following the formation of our technical committee, Mai's work, and that of her Malaysian colleagues, maintained the position of Malaysia at the heart of ISO/TC 283 activity, participating actively across our working groups and task groups.
Mai's commitment to ISO/TC 283 was always strong, and she made a great contribution to the development of our committee, including the energy and enthusiasm that she brought to her role as the founding convenor of our Developing Countries Coordination Group (DCCG) in which she had continued to be part of the leadership team.
Jim Howe
Jim Howe, a long-serving member of TC 283 passed away in July 2024. Jim represented the US in a number of TC 283 activities, including the development of ISO 45002, our standard providing guidance on the implementation of ISO 45001. Most recently he led the US delegation in our development of ISO 45004, on OH&S performance evaluation, in which he was one of the most committed members of the working group. His involvement in ISO's OH&S activities included membership of the project committee that developed ISO 45001, before ISO/TC 283 was established, and he was a member of TC 283 from the outset.
A passionate advocate of "the process approach" Jim contributed enthusiastically to the work of our TC, He was generous with the time and effort that he invested in thorough preparation for meetings, and was articulate and persuasive in arguing his case, while respecting the need for compromise to accommodate the views of others. We are grateful for all he contributed to our work and are saddened by his loss.
Steve Griffiths
Steve Griffiths, a driving force behind the ISO/TC 283 web site and in our Communications task group, died unexpectedly in February 2020. Steve worked for BSI, the UK’s national standards body, as a scheme manager and product champion for OH&S and environmental health and safety. He was an active member of the OHSAS Project Group and valued contributor to both the ISO project and technical committees responsible for ISO 45001. Steve took tremendous pleasure in working with people from around the world in ISO/TC 283 and is fondly remembered as a generous, friendly and always professional colleague. He spent many years supporting charitable causes and leaves behind a wife, daughter and two grandchildren.
Stan Rodgers
Stan Rodgers, who led the Australian delegation throughout the development of ISO 45001, died in 2019. Stan was a passionate believer in standards as a force for good in the world, and a lively contributor to all of our discussions over many years. He is greatly missed by his friends and colleagues in both the OH&S and environmental management communities.
Hussein Rahmat
Hussein Rahmat, our colleague from Malaysia, died in June 2018. Hussein is remembered with great affection as a passionate, constructive and friendly member of ISO/PC 283. His warm welcome and generosity when hosting the final ISO/PC 283 meeting in Melaka will never be forgotten and our sincere condolences are extended to his friends and family.
