    • ISO/TC 10 - 42nd Plenary Meeting Series in Oslo, Norway 2026-06-08--16

        All things come to an end

        My time as secretary of ISO/TC 10 will end on June 30. It has been a privilege to serve this important committee for over two decades.

        It is very reassuring to know that Ms Andersson will remain on the team to make sure that all the administrative will continue to run as a clock.

        I am also very pleased that Ms Ahlenblom will take on the role as committee manager with enthusiasm and of course the chair Mr Eriksson who will steer the committee.

        The meeting series in Oslo has been successful. New work has been initiated and a important decisions for the future development of ISO/TC 10 were taken.

        Many thanks to the hosts Standards Norway, especially Mr Jensen. Also, thanks to Mr Østad for the guided tour of the new parts of Oslo; the Deichmann library, the Munch museum and the Opera, plus the tasting menu of Norwegian food.

        As always,  the meetings have had a spirit of cooperation and willingness to reach agreement. Many thanks to the chair Mr Eriksson. When I started as secretary there was ongoing disputes with IEC/TC 3 and ISO/TC 213, disputes which we now have found ways to settle in an orderly manner.

        In my years I have found many good friends in the work so it is with somewhat mixed feeling I now move on to the next stage of life.

        I wish you all continued success in the work and all best wishes for the future.

        Tuesday 2026-06-16 

        The plenary meeting marked the final day of the series, bringing the work of the meeting series to a close. 

        The committee reviewed key outcomes from the sub-committees and working groups, and took decisions for the committee as a whole. 

        We also heard updates from liaison organizations, including IEC/TC 3, highlighting related work on their side. One point of interest was the use of database-based standards in IEC, an area where ISO could potentially learn and evolve. 

        The meeting concluded with the decision to hold the next ISO/TC 10 plenary meeting series in April 2027 in Buenos Aires, hosted by the Argentine Institute for Standardization and Certification (IRAM). 

        Finally, ISO/TC 10 extends its sincere thanks to Standards Norway for hosting this year’s meetings. We have had a productive, rewarding, and fun time.

        Monday 2026-06-15

        The morning was dedicated to the plenary meeting of ISO/TC 10/SC 10, where the reference designation system was a main focus. Several parts of the ISO 81346 series are currently under development. Ideas for future work were also presented, including potential projects related to 3D modelling of power supply systems.

        In the afternoon, ISO/TC 10/SC 1 held its plenary meeting. The sub-committee is responsible for general TPD conventions, much of it in close collaboration with other committees. One ongoing project addresses how to prepare clear instructions for products assembled by consumers.

        Saturday 2026-06-13

        Saturday combined both detailed technical work and broader strategic discussions.

        SC 6/WG 27, a maintenance team, is currently revising two existing standards. ISO 18388 addresses types and dimensioning of relief grooves, while ISO 15786 covers simplified representation and dimensioning of holes in mechanical product documentation.

        The Chair’s Advisory Group (CAG) met to discuss longer-term direction. Topics included the continued role of human‑readable documentation in an increasingly digital and model-based environment, as well as how ISO/TC 10 should position itself among closely related ISO and IEC committees. Ensuring that standards work together coherently across domains remains a central challenge.

        Friday 2026-06-12

        Friday was dedicated to plenary meetings in two sub-committees, and a parallel working group 18 (ISO/TC 10/WG 18) meeting.

        ISO/TC 10/SC 6 reviewed progress across its working groups. One key outcome was agreement to initiate new ISO 25562 projects on optimization of mechanical products, with New Project (NP) ballots to follow.

        ISO/TC 10/SC 8 also held its plenary meeting. While the current work program is relatively limited, new project ideas were discussed, including further development of the ISO 4157 series for designation of building parts.

        WG 18 focuses on drawing and writing instruments, a reminder of the committee’s long history. Among the topics discussed was the viscosity of fluids used in ballpoint pens.

        Thursday 2026-06-11

        Sub-committee 6 focus on mechanical engineering and two of its working groups met today.

        SC 6/WG 22 discussed ongoing work on ISO 24351, addressing documentation and creation of design models. The group also explored a potential new project (ISO 25940) on digital twins (models synchronized with physical assets) to enable different types of virtual verification.

        SC 6/WG 23 continued its work on projects related to finite element analysis (FEA) and design optimization. The latter aims to establish a series of standards supporting methods for finding optimized design solutions under defined conditions, including upcoming work on topology and parametric optimization of mechanical products.

        Wednesday 2026-06-10

        Wednesday meant another busy day today with three meetings held.

        WG 19 focused on two fundamental series. The ISO 128 series define how technical drawings are presented, while ISO 129 defines how dimensions and tolerances are shown, both on drawings and in 3D models. The upcoming version will further strengthen its role in a model‑based environment.

        SC 10/JWG 10 discussed ISO 81346-12, which defines how buildings and their systems are structured and consistently identified using function, product, and location perspectives.

        Finally, WG 16 continued work on ISO 16792, Digital product definition data practices. This is a key standard for model-based engineering, supporting the shift from traditional 2D drawings to 3D-based product definitions. The next draft will soon be released for DIS ballot, with publication expected next year.

        Standardization is often about aligning the meaning of words and symbols, and that has been a central theme today.

        WG 17 is responsible for harmonizing terminology across ISO/TC 10 through ISO 10209, “Vocabulary — Terms relating to technical drawings, product definition and related documentation.” The next revision is in its early stages, and one discussion focused on whether terms like “part” and “component” should be treated as distinct or synonymous.

        In parallel, SC 1/WG 10 is working on graphical symbols. ISO 7083, “Symbols used in technical product documentation — proportions and dimensions,” has been under preparation for several years, and the group agreed that it is now time to launch a formal revision project. The discussions also highlighted the need for symbols to be consistently defined in their respective source standards, enabling uniform representation across tools and systems.

        Monday 2026-06-08

        The plenary meeting series officially kicked off on Monday at Standards Norway’s premises in Lilleaker, Oslo.

        The first meeting was held by ISO/TC 10/SC 1/JWG 12, focusing on harmonization between ISO/TC 10 and ISO/TC 213. The group has just finalized ISO 20223, “Representation and identification of situation features”, which is now in its final steps before publication. The standard introduces clear rules and graphical symbols for defining situation features (points, lines and planes) in technical product documentation, helping ensure consistent and unambiguous communication.

        The group also looked ahead to upcoming work, including discussions on how associativity between specifications and features should best be represented in annotated 3D models.

         

        In the afternoon, WG 20 and JWG 21 continued the program.

        WG 20 is advancing ISO 8887-3 on design for end‑of‑life processing. The standard will provide guidance on how to design products for reuse, repair, remanufacture, recycling or disposal, supporting better resource efficiency and long-term value. It is currently being prepared for the CD ballot.

        JWG 21 (a joint group with IEC/TC 3) is working on ISO 81355-2, which aims to provide practical examples of document types and presentation formats used in engineering. The work is still in an early stage but will support clearer and more consistent information exchange across disciplines.

        Welcome to the ISO/TC 10 plenary meeting series in Oslo

        This year, Standards Norway is hosting the ISO/TC 10 plenary meeting series at its facilities in Oslo during June 8-16. I’m very pleased to travel to Norway and look forward to meeting experts from our working groups and subcommittees, some in person and others joining virtually.

        This is my first plenary meeting series as Chair of ISO/TC 10, so it feels exciting and it’s a great honour. ISO/TC 10 plays a fundamental role in engineering, manufacturing, construction, and the process industry, and I’m proud to take on this responsibility.

        My name is Christian Schärlund Eriksson, and I took over as Chair in January this year, succeeding Richard Lindqvist. Richard has led the committee with great dedication over the past nine years, and I’m very grateful that he continues to be actively involved in our work.

        I work as a standardization engineer at Volvo Group in Gothenburg, Sweden. I also chair the Swedish national mirror committees for ISO/TC 10 and ISO/TC 213.

        I hope you’ll follow the plenary meeting series here on this page. I’ll be sharing updates throughout the 8 days of meetings, so stay tuned.

      This was the 37:th plenary meeting of SC1 and we managed to meet and agree on a total of 14 resolutions.

      2024-06-14 - Fifth day of the 40:th ISO/TC 10 meeting series

      ISO/TC 10/ WG17 Vocabulary of terms and definitions (Morning session)

      Working group 17 managed to meet in the morning session and went through the ISO 10209:2022 Terms and definitions standard and gave updates on the current status. 

      ISO/TC 10 SC 10/WG 13 – Graphical symbols for diagrams (Afternoon session)

      Working group 13 of SC10 managed to meet in the afternoon session and went through the ISO 14617-1:2005 Graphical symbols for diagrams Part 1: General information and indexes. 

      ISO/TC 10/ SC 10/JWG 10 – Reference designation system (Morning and Afternoon session)

      The joint working group 10 of SC 10 on the work on reference designation systems (RDS) had a whole day meeting and managed to go through all the various topics covered in the agenda of the day.

    • ISO/TC 10 - IEC/TC 3 meeting

      Today, the leadership, with the chairperson and committee manager, of ISO/TC 10 - Technical Product Documentation met the leadership for IEC/TC 3 - Documentation, graphical symbols and representations of technical information. 
      The meeting was held at the SEK office in Kista, Stockholm, Sweden.      ISO-TC 10 o IEC-TC 3.jpg

      The purpose of the meeting was for ISO/TC 10 to greet the new chairman of IEC TC 3, but also to talk about improved and closer cooperation. We have a number of common standards that are developed jointly by ISO and IEC and thus receive a double logo. Some of the currently most important standards discussed were the ISO/IEC 81346 series of standards that manage reference designations and systems for it, ie RDS. Another important series of standards is ISO/IEC 81355 Classification and designation of information. Together with these two standard series, we will be able to classify and identify the digital objects and give us the opportunity to connect the objects to their information. Among other things, this can lead to the model-based way of working and we can start to let go of drawings and other traditional documents.

      News from the 39:th ISO/TC 10 meeting series, Berlin, Germany, 2023-06-05

      ISO/TC 10 has received a kind offer from the US delegation that next year’s ISO/TC 10 meeting series possibly can be held in the end of May or early beginning of June of 2024 at the Purdue University, Discovery Park District in West Lafayette, Indiana.

      Today ISO/TC 10/SC 1/JWG 12 TPD and GPS harmonization, ISO/TC 10/SC 1/WG 10 ISO 7083 and Validation Team for TPD Symbols and SC6 Mechanical Engineering Documentation and its workings groups, WG21 Classification of technical requirements , WG22 Three-dimensional modeling and WG23 Finite element analysis (FEA) managed to meet face to face at the Siemens-Energy premises in Berlin.

      News from the 39:th ISO/TC 10 meeting series in Berlin, Germany, 2023-06-02.

      Yesterday ISO/TC 10 WG16, 3D models: Presentation of product definition data, managed to meet in person and face to face at the Siemens-Energy plant in Berlin. After the meeting the working group managed to get a group photo in front of the bear statue in close proximity to the main entrance.

      Nathan Hartman, “new” WG16 convenor, excellently managed and monitored the meeting yesterday. Nathan will contribute greatly with his leadership to the ongoing work (PWI) for the new edition of the ISO 16792 standard.

      Today SC 10 – Process plant documentation - will have their plenary meetings. Firstly, SC 10/JWG 10 – Reference designation system - will start the meeting day by discussing various topics on reference designation systems. The ISO 81346 series of standards that define and describe how reference designation systems can be used on products and different systems is a critically important horizontal standard that contributes to smarter products and manufacturing systems. Secondly, SC 10/WG 13 – Graphical symbols for diagrams - will proceed with their working group meeting this morning and afternoon.

    News from the WG 17 and WG 20 meetings, Berlin, Germany, 2023-05-30

    Yesterday there was two WG (Working Group) meetings and one JWG (Joint Working Group) meeting. WG17 “Vocabulary of terms and definitions”, WG20 “Design and documentation for manufacture, assembly, disassembly and end-of-life processing managed to meet in person and face to face at the Siemens-Energy plant in Berlin. JWG21 is the joint ISO/TC 10 - IEC/TC 3 working group that work on the ISO 81355 series standards. JWG21 also managed to meet in person and face to face at the Siemens-Energy plant in Berlin.
