Standards in Action 2026: Discover How Geospatial Standards Are Shaping the Future

Join us on 6 November 2026 for Standards in Action, a free online event showcasing how ISO/TC 211 geospatial standards are being applied across government, defence, marine navigation, artificial intelligence, addressing, and automated transport. The event brings together experts from the UK and around the world to demonstrate how standards deliver real-world interoperability, innovation, and trust.

This year's programme highlights a range of important and timely topics. Speakers will explore the role of geospatial standards in strengthening collaboration across, the practical application of the ISO 19100 series within the maritime domain through S-100 implementation, and the future of defence interoperability through modern approaches to geospatial metadata. The programme also includes perspectives from Japan's Geospatial Information Authority on national standardisation activities, showcasing how geospatial standards are supporting global cooperation.

Emerging technologies are a particular focus. Sessions will examine how standards-based APIs can support AI and how ISO and OGC standards are being used to develop High-Definition Map Language (HDML) for automated driving. Other presentations will address the intelligent use of metadata in data governance and the continuing challenge of address standards consistency across government.

These topics are central to ISO/TC 211's mission. They demonstrate how international geospatial standards enable data sharing across organisations, support digital transformation, improve interoperability, and provide trusted foundations for AI.

As geospatial data becomes increasingly critical to national infrastructure, public services, and innovation, standards remain essential for ensuring that data can be discovered, understood, integrated, and used with confidence.

This committee contributes with over 100 standards supporting the following Sustainable Development Goals:

Scope

Standardization in the field of digital geographic information.

This work aims to establish a structured set of standards for information concerning objects or phenomena that are directly or indirectly associated with a location relative to the Earth.

Within the scope of geographic information, these standards may specify methods, tools, and services for data management. Data management includes acquiring, processing, analyzing, accessing, presenting, and publishing geographic data for users and systems.

The work shall link to appropriate standards for information technology and data where possible, and provide a framework for the development of sector-specific applications using geographic data.

Vision:

ISO/TC 211 wants to support a sustainably prosperous future by providing, in cooperation with others, a set of standards that enable better management of geographic information.
