A management system is a way in which an organization manages the interrelated parts of its business to achieve its objectives. Any organization has a management system, but it can be standardized or not. The MSSs provide a list of requirements for implementing the organizational framework for establishing a policy, identifying objectives, planning actions, and checking the results in a continuous improvement methodology.
MSS are written as requirements standards that can be easily assessed for conformance. Conformity assessment from a specific MSS or a group of MSSs can be done by the organization itself (self-assessment), by a second interested party or by a third independent organization (certification). Certification to management system standards is not a requirement. You can benefit from implementing these standards without being certified to them. In 2006 a technical group for coordination of all MSSs was created by ISO. It is called ISO/TMBG/JTCG “Joint Technical Coordination Group on MSS” (TAG 13). The JTCG’s main purpose is to encourage consistency within ISO’s portfolio of management systems standards (“MSS”). You can fin more information about JTCG here.
ISO TC 46/SC11 “Archives/records management” joined the JTCG in 2009 when developing the first edition of ISO 30301.
The main outcomes of JTCG are:
- The harmonized structure (HS) for MSS, including common text and core terms and definitions. This is included in Annex SL of ISO directives and means any specific MSS, such as ISO 30301, contains the same text, definitions and requirements as other
- Recommendations and advice for the MSS drafters, used when a new MSS is been developed or when an existing one is revised

The consistency of all management systems standards enables greater communication and cooperation across disciplines, especially for integrated implementation and conformity assessment.
