Ways to get work started 

In ISO/TC 211, there are several ways to start production or revision of a standard (or other ISO deliverable):

• If there is a general idea that work is needed in a subject area, the TC may decide to initiate a Preliminary Work Item (PWI), also known as Stage 0 project this idea may be a document, or a recommendation from a WG;
• If there is a clearer idea for a new standard, the work proceeds to Proposal stage and is submitted as a New work item proposal for TC decision by ballot;
• If an existing standard need changing, the TC can decide by ballot on the Systematic Review, the work proceeds directly to Preparatory stage;
• Other needs for amending a standard may cause the TC to decide to start up the work;
• If you are not a member of ISO/TC 211, you can suggest work by using the Standards tracker to raise a “New Requirement” or an error report against a published document.
