Before you read this page you should read how to get a work started on Proposal Stage - New Work Item Proposal and Roles in committee work

Preparatory Stage - Working Draft (WD)

Creating the suggested standard

You start the work from an approved NP. This is the core production substage (20.20) of the standard production process (in a normal IS procedure), where the project team gets together and by consensus, creates a draft standard that the project team and the working group (convenor) is content solves the needs identified in the proposal.

Addressing NP comments

The secretariat will provide the project leader with the result of the NP ballot vote and compilation of comments to agree on the next actions to take.
If there were any comments from the NP ballot (or the Systematic Review), you need to show how you have addressed them. The ISO comment sheet, is used, i.e. the same form sent out with the ballots that allow commenting. Your task is to write in the right most column how the comment has been addressed in the project. ISO/TC 211 usually use Accepted, Accepted in principle and Not accepted as the minimum information given in this column. It is recommended that you elaborate a little on the Accepted in principle and Not accepted answers to make sure you do not get the same comment or a No vote at a later stage ballot.

Formatting the document

The document needs to be formatted using the ISO simple draft template. If the project is a revision, the new template can be added to the old document. The ISO simple draft template is updated semi-regularly, so check that the correct version is being used before submission to next stage. It can often change between the start of the project and the final submission. If you have any problems or question about the correct template or how to apply the template consult with the ISO/TC 211 secretariat.

Content

The page on Content of the document states the harmonization practices for the document and its resources and that is applied in ISO/TC 211, e.g. UML models and more. Even though it is not necessary before the DIS stage to supply the figures as separate graphic files, it is a good thing to start collecting all your graphical files you are using in the document.

Try also to introduce new content to the document as early in the process as possible see When do I add new content to my document.

Quality assurance and submission

After a final quality assurance by the project lead together with the working group convenor, the document is ready for the next step Committee Stage - Committee Draft (CD). A CD needs to contain a more or less completed document, so it is vital to not rush to submit the developed document to be registered as a CD until you are happy with the document. To submit the document for registration as a CD and for the following CD consultation, you send the Word document or if the project is using the OSD tool send a notification to the to the ISO/TC 211 secretariat. A CD is registered by the secretariat if criteria are met concerning document format (images etc) and that the comments from the NP ballot are resolved. This is the first time since the NP ballot (Proposal stage) that the ISO/TC 211 committee members will see the work.
