As the world marks World Standards Day on October 14, attention turns to the unsung heroes of global interoperability—technical standards. Among these, the work of ISO Technical Committee 211 (ISO/TC 211) stands out for its transformative impact on how geospatial data is shared, understood, and applied across sectors and borders.

Established in 1994, ISO/TC 211 is responsible for standardizing digital geographic information. Our suite of over 100 published standards provides a structured framework for managing geospatial data, including acquisition, processing, analysis, and dissemination. These standards underpin critical applications in urban planning, environmental monitoring, disaster response, and infrastructure development, enabling diverse stakeholders to collaborate effectively.

The importance of these standards is especially evident in the context of Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs). By promoting harmonized data schemas and ontologies, ISO/TC 211 facilitates seamless Government-to-Government (G2G) and Government-to-Business (G2B) partnerships. This interoperability empowers organizations to aggregate, integrate, and share data—a cornerstone of modern governance and innovation.

World Standards Day 2025, themed “Shared Vision for a Better World”, underscores how standards contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ISO/TC 211’s work directly supports goals such as reducing vulnerability to climate-related disasters, improving access to food and education, and enhancing public services through location-based insights.

As geospatial data becomes increasingly central to decision-making, the role of ISO/TC 211 in fostering global cooperation, data quality, and innovation cannot be overstated.
