Models for Seamless Hinterland and Maritime
10

Scope

This Technical Report:

- Addresses information models and data standards that are relevant for seamless maritime and hinterland logistics, focusing on ports as the central integration nodes.

- Considers “port” in a broad sense, including:

  • Large seaports;

  • Inland ports and inland waterway terminals

  • Multi-modal terminals (container terminals, RoRo terminals, rail-road terminals) that serve as hinterland interfaces

- Focuses on cross-domain data exchange involving

  • Ship–port interactions (port calls, electronic clearance, arrival/departure reporting)

  • Port–terminal–hinterland interactions (cargo flows, gate operations, yard operations, rail/road interfaces

  • End-to-end tracking of cargo, containers, and transport units across modes

- Recognizes that many existing standards primarily express business/operational data, and this report emphasizes the geospatial aspects (locations, infrastructure objects, networks, routes) required for integrated logistics decision-making

- Takes particular note of green and digital shipping corridor initiatives, such as the Singapore–Rotterdam Green and Digital Shipping Corridor, as driving use cases for interoperable, geospatially-aware port and corridor information models

The Technical Report

  • Identifies gaps and overlaps between existing information models;
  • Provides requirements and recommendations for a port information model that can bridge maritime and hinterland domains
  • Suggests future work items within ISO and in coordination with other organizations.

Out of scope

  • Detailed message specifications or XSD/JSON schemas of existing standards
  • Regulatory compliance issues beyond data model implications
  • Performance, cybersecurity, or organizational governance topics except where they directly influence data model design
