Record Management and Document Applications Committees working together in South Africa

Document and Records Management standards in South Africa are closely aligned.  The mirror South African Committes from ISO TC171- Document Management Applications which focuses on imaging and electronic document management (EDRMS and ECM) and from ISO TC46/SC11- Archives/records management   work closely together and can almost be seen as one group.

Although there is a slightly different composition of members, most members are part of both committees, and all standards are developed taking into account the work of the other committee.

The public sector has adopted standards from both these committees into directives and guidelines for government.  The three parts of ISO 16175- Principles and functional requirements for records in electronic office environments  is used as a principal tool for functional requirements for records management systems in Government.

The private sector uses ISO standards as a guideline.  There is no certification body for any of the TC 46/SC11 or TC 171 standards but the standards are commonly used.
