In March 2017, Belgium, through the Bureau for Standardisation (NBN) and its NBN/I04611 standardisation committee, became a P-member and was represented for the first time in the plenary meeting in Pretoria, held in May 2017.
Since the regulatory framework is currently changing in Belgium, records and information management is a growing concern, not only for public organizations, but also for the private sector. Among others, the adoption of the Belgian Digital Act (2016), which implements the eIDAS Regulation (European Regulation on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions), appeared to be a great opportunity to develop policies and to gather national experts.
A national mirror committee for the ISO TC46/SC11 was therefore created and is now increasing its membership in order to take an active part in international standardization processes for records management and to implement international standards into national ones.
The first decisions of the national committee regarding implementations of the ISO standards into NBN standards will be taken by the end of this year and will likely lead to the national adoption of the ISO 30300 MSR series, ISO 16175 and ISO 15489. Moreover, the latter will probably be mentioned, among other international standards, in the Royal Decree that facilitates the application of the Digital Act. As the three Belgian national languages are French, Dutch and German, links with French-speaking countries, the Netherlands and Germany will be established or strengthened to work together.
