
In a significant leap forward for standardized solutions in media authenticity, the 102nd Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) meeting, held in San Francisco from January 22 to 26, witnessed the elevation of JPEG Trust to Draft International Standard (DIS) status. The move is seen as a crucial step in the global pursuit of verifiable and trustworthy visual information.
JPEG Trust, focused on addressing the challenges posed by fake media and misinformation, introduced its Core Foundation, Part 1 (21617-1), during the meeting. This comprehensive framework offers guidelines for establishing a trusted environment for media use, emphasizing aspects such as provenance, authenticity, integrity, copyright, and identification of assets and stakeholders. The DIS is expected to be published as an International Standard in the summer of 2024, reflecting the urgency of combating the proliferation of fake media, particularly in the realm of Generative AI.
In addition to Part 1, the meeting established a proposed Part 2, "Trust Profiles Catalogue," designed to specify a range of Trust Profiles tailored to common usage scenarios.
JPEG Trust also addressed the standardization of media tokenization, incorporating responses from the Call for Proposals (CfP) of JPEG NFT. Focus areas include declarations of authorship and ownership, aiming to enhance interoperability.
To further strengthen the JPEG Trust framework, the committee updated the Use Cases and Requirements document, incorporating additional specifications related to composited media. A publicly available white paper detailing the JPEG Trust framework is accessible on the JPEG website.
Prof. Touradj Ebrahimi, the Convenor of the JPEG Committee, emphasized the significance of JPEG Trust, stating, "JPEG Trust will bring trustworthiness back to imaging with specifications under the governance of the entire International community and stakeholders."

JPEG AI: The meeting witnessed improvements in the JPEG AI Verification Model, with a multi-branch decoding architecture and enhanced rate-distortion performance in various use cases. Twelve core experiments were established, and demonstrations were conducted on smartphones.
JPEG Pleno: A Committee Draft for ISO/IEC 21794-Part 6, "Learning-based point cloud coding," was released, adding innovative technology to existing Parts focused on Light field and Holography coding.
JPEG XS: Core parts of JPEG XS 3rd edition are ready for publication as International standards, showcasing advancements in low-latency and high-quality 4K/8K 360-degree views over 5G mobile networks.
JPEG XE: The committee continued work on event-based vision, preparing a Common Test Conditions document for evaluation and initiating a Draft Call for Proposals on lossless coding.
