ISO/TC 20/SC 13 is currently working on updating ISO 14721:2012, the reference model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS). In July, the results of a ballot successfully advanced the standard from a Committee Draft (CD) to a Draft International Standard (DIS).
For those unfamiliar, ISO 14721:2012 defines the framework for an OAIS, which is essentially an archive consisting of an organization, its people, and systems that take on the crucial responsibility of preserving information and making it accessible to a designated community. The standard sets forth a series of specific responsibilities for an OAIS, clearly distinguishing it from other uses of the term "archive."
The term "open" in OAIS denotes that ISO 14721:2012, as well as any future related International Standards, are developed within open forums. This emphasizes the collaborative nature of the standard development process, promoting inclusivity and transparency.
It's important to note that the "open" aspect of OAIS does not imply unrestricted access to the archive. Instead, it highlights the openness and collaborative spirit that underpins the development of the standard.
