The speed of adoption of cloud based technologies, including cloud-first purchasing strategies, has raised new issues for the appropriate management of information across a range of issues including data sovereignty, risk, contracting provisions, auditability, import and export requirements. In turn these very flexible applications are spurring organisations to pay much greater attention to their information architectures to ensure that the data/information/records requirements are known, well managed and able to take advantage of agile technology developments while ensuring organizational sustainability. Increasingly the attention if moving from technology based systems to the data/information/records that need to last longer than any one generation of technology.
There is a growing professional understanding of the importance of metadata for all aspects of managing data, documents, information, records and archives. The Recordkeeping metadata property reference set (RMPRS) has been recently published as AS/NZS 5478-2015. With standards in place, the challenge is to ensure that they are highlighted to the information management community. Refiguring and rearticulating standards to ensure that they are understood to be relevant to the digital age is key issues of governance, interoperability, ability to import and export, persistent identifiers, sustainability over systems and format changes are likely areas of future work.
