The November 13, 2024, ISO/TC 46/SC 11 Plenary Meeting brought records management experts together in a virtual session led by Michelle Tolliday. The meeting began with routine formalities, including roll call, agenda adoption, and a review of past action items.
The agenda was packed with updates across various focus areas. Hakim Mkinsi, Technical Program Manager, discussed new ISO product development processes, highlighting opportunities for enhanced collaboration. Alan Shipman followed with a liaison status update, emphasizing partnerships instrumental to archives and records management.
Each working group and advisory team presented progress reports, detailing substantial advancements across the board. Wout Van Der Reijden opened the reports with insights from AG 1, the Advisory Group, on supporting strategic records management goals. Geoff Goodell presented JWG 1’s work on integrating blockchain with records management, underscoring blockchain's potential to enhance data security and trust.
Xiaomi An updated the committee on AHG 7’s review of ISO 15489 standards, which are critical for guiding effective records management practices globally. Adrian Cunningham reported on WG 1’s ongoing work with metadata, addressing efforts to standardize metadata practices to improve records discoverability and management. Carlota Bustelo from WG 8 shared developments in Management Systems for Records, focusing on enhancing system interoperability and compliance.
Sharon Smith of WG 20 presented the Records Management Capability Assessment Model, outlining improvements to assess and advance organizations' records management maturity. Anki Steen and Aldo Maugeri from WG 21 discussed the Disposition/Digital Legacies project, addressing best practices for digital legacy management as digital records grow in volume and significance. Finally, Xiaomi An presented WG 22’s work on Records Management and AI, covering the emerging role of artificial intelligence in automating and refining records management processes.
The meeting wrapped up with resolutions, discussions on future meetings, and plans for the next plenary in May 2025. This gathering reinforced ISO/TC 46/SC 11’s commitment to advancing standards in archives and records management, ensuring these fields adapt to technological and regulatory changes.
