ISO 21520 Project, programme and portfolio management — Artificial intelligence — Concepts, applications, and implications
(Project Leader: Charles J. Lesko)
- This project approved by TC 258 in May 2025. Currently in the Enquiry stage (Stage 40).
- This international standard defines key concepts and applications of artificial intelligence (AI) within the context of project, programme, and portfolio management (PPPM). It addresses the potential benefits, risks, governance considerations, and appropriate scope of AI use by organizations engaged in PPPM activities.
- The standard is intended as a complement to ISO 21502:2020, ISO 21503:2022, and ISO 21504:2022, and provides practical guidance for organizations seeking to adopt or enhance their use of AI technologies to support their project, programme, and portfolio management practices.
- In addition, the standard offers PPPM practitioners essential guidance on responsible AI use, highlighting critical considerations such as security, governance frameworks, ethics, bias mitigation, transparency, socio-economic impacts, and other relevant factors.
- This guidance is applicable to all types of organizations—public, private, and non-profit—and to any project or programme, regardless of its purpose, delivery approach, lifecycle model, complexity, size, cost, or duration.
- Interested experts should register with their National Standards Bodies to be part of the Working group.
- The standard is expected to be published in July 2027 with a 24 month Standards Development Track.
