Keeping Standards in Synchronization:
How ISO/TC 211 Harmonizes Global Geospatial Data

The significance of the geospatial context of information is widely acknowledged, as shown by the daily use of smartphones and maps in integrated systems. ISO/TC 211 creates essential standards for describing and sharing that geospatial context, making sure that information can be exchanged and used across administrative, domain, and system boundaries. These standards form the basis for regional and national geospatial standards, as well as domain-specific standards in areas like geology, smart cities, construction, and automated driving. Standards within ISO/TC 211 are developed through collaboration among experts worldwide, working closely with other standardization organizations. The strong relationship with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has been evident since both organizations started in 1994. Within ISO, Joint Working Groups ensure connections to Building Information Modeling through ISO/TC 59/SC 13 JWG 14 and to Intelligent Transport Systems through JWG 11 with ISO/TC 204. For three decades, ISO/TC 211 standards have been described using structured schemas and reused globally. Since 1998, UML has been the main schema language, while Semantic Web ontologies based on OWL are an expanding area. Implementation schemas in XML and JSON are derived from these models. Key domain standards, such as those from the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), are based on these core models, as are ITS standards from ISO/TC 204 and CEN/TC 278. When geospatial information worldwide is based on core standards and schemas from ISO/TC 211, interoperability is enhanced, allowing information to be shared across countries, domains, and systems. |
