Global Geospatial Data Standards at INTERGEO 2025

As the world’s leading geospatial conference, INTERGEO 2025 opened its doors to over 17,000 professionals from more than 120 countries, showcasing the transformative power of geoinformation technologies. A key theme throughout the event was the pivotal role of international standards, particularly those developed by ISO Technical Committee 211 (ISO/TC 211), in shaping the future of geospatial data governance and innovation.

ISO/TC 211, celebrating over 30 years of standardization in geographic information and geomatics, continues to provide the backbone for interoperability, data quality, and digital sovereignty in geospatial systems. With over 100 published standards and active collaboration with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM), ISO/TC 211 enables seamless data exchange across platforms, sectors, and borders.

At INTERGEO 2025, held in Frankfurt from October 7–9, the importance of these standards was underscored in sessions on AI-powered remote sensing, urban digital twins, and BIM-GIS integration. Speakers emphasized how standardized geospatial frameworks are essential for climate adaptation, disaster response, and smart city planning.

“Open standards like those from ISO/TC 211 are the silent enablers of innovation,” said Peter Parslow, former chair of the committee. “They ensure that data remains accurate, interoperable, and accessible—whether you're transferring a polygon between databases or building a national spatial data infrastructure.”

INTERGEO’s exhibition floor featured over 600 exhibitors demonstrating cutting-edge applications of these standards—from AI-driven analytics and Earth observation to mobile mapping and geospatial IoT. The conference reinforced that as geoinformation becomes central to decision-making in government, industry, and civil society, robust standards are more critical than ever.

As INTERGEO 2025 concludes, the message is clear: the future of geospatial technology depends on collaboration, innovation, and the continued evolution of open, global standards.
