ISO/TC 211 remembers 2009 & 2010 |

2009 saw publication of a two ‘additional parts’: ISO 19111-2:2009 Spatial referencing by coordinates – Part 2: Extension for parametric values. Personally, I remember this as one of the standards under discussion when I first got involved at a national level, and I’m grateful to a long standing geodesist for explaining it to me! This was absorbed into the 2019 edition of ISO 19111. The other “part 2” was for ISO 19115 Metadata – Part 2: Extensions for imagery and gridded data, which in 2019 was generalised a bit to cover metadata for acquisition and processing of all kinds of data, whilst retaining its “imagery” (Earth Observation) focus. 2009 also saw the first output of our working with UN FAO: ISO 19144-1:2009 Classification systems — Part 1: Classification system structure and formalisation of our XML Maintenance team into a standing ‘advisory group’. Our headline for 2010 was winning the ISO Lawrence D. Eicher Leadership Award. ISO President at the time, Dr. Alan Morrison said: “Through this award, not only do we want to acknowledge the importance of the activities of ISO/TC 211, but also the dedication and hard work since its inception in 1994.” We were especially honoured to be nominated for the award again this year, even though we did not win. |

| 2010 also saw publication of a pair of standards fast tracked from OGC: ISO 19142 is OGC Web Feature Service and ISO 19143 is its partner Filter Encoding. These have been very widely adopted and form a core part of many regional and national Spatial Data Infrastructures. As technology moves on, users are increasingly moving across to ISO 19168 and ISO 19177, equivalent to OGC API Features and OGC API Tiles. These provide REST APIs whereas the older standards still work fine with the older web architectures of SOAP or long query URLs. | ![]() |
