ISO/TC 211 remembers 2006 & 2007

After the busy publication year of 2005, we only published one standard in 2006: ISO 19138 Data quality measures. This was then absorbed into ISO 19157:2013 Data quality, and we are now working to publish the measures as a register of machine readable definitions managed separately from ISO 19157-1:2023. With our friends at OGC, we hope to demonstrate this new step towards machine readable standards in our meetings in November.

2007’s publications included:

Our first revision, to ISO 19111 Spatial referencing by coordinates, now just “Referencing by coordinates”, a core standard on how a short set of numbers can represent a place on or near the surface of the earth potentially at a particular point in time. This document has been revised and amended several times to keep up with developments in technology and increasing accuracy in our understanding of the changing shape of the earth.

ISO 19136 Geography markup language, the second specification fast tracked from OGC.

ISO 19139 Metadata – XML schema implementation, four years after publication of the logical model in ISO 19115. Now ISO 19115-3:2016 contains the XML implementation of ISO 19115-1:2014 but still had an almost 2 ½ year gap. We are hoping that increasingly adopting a model driven approach will reduce this gap between conceptual and implementation standards. The ISO 19139 XML remains in use in Europe for INSPIRE, while other countries have migrated to ISO 19115-3. This is an example of the time lag there can be between publishing a standard and migration to it when there are millions of implementations: metadata records in Europe conformant to ISO 19119:2007.
