ISO 19182

This Technical Report provides guidance for incorporating geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) into the ISO 19100 series of geographic information standards maintained by ISO/TC 211.

This document:

• establishes a working definition of GeoAI in the context of ISO/TC 211 and identifies the properties that distinguish GeoAI from generic artificial intelligence;
• identifies ten standardization objects — categories of artefact or concern within a GeoAI workflow that require standardized description, quality assurance, interoperability or governance;
• surveys the existing ISO/TC 211 standards relevant to GeoAI and assesses the extent to which they address the identified standardization objects;
• analyses the gaps between GeoAI standardization needs and the current ISO/TC 211 portfolio, assigning coverage ratings and priority levels to each object;
• provides operational guidance on how to close the identified gaps, including a decision flow for choosing between amendment, profile, register population and new deliverable;
• recommends candidate work items for future standardization activity in ISO/TC 211, organized into short-term, medium-term and long-term tiers.

This document addresses geospatially specific aspects of artificial intelligence. It does not address generic AI concepts, measures or lifecycle stages, which are within the scope of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42. It does not address implementation encodings or web-API specifications, which are within the scope of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). The division of responsibility among TC 211, SC 42 and OGC is established in 5.4.

This document covers GeoAI applications across all types of geographic data, including but not limited to satellite and airborne imagery, vector features, point clouds, trajectories, geotagged text and spatial knowledge graphs. It is not confined to Earth observation.
