ISO/TC 184/SC 4 is an active community that is continuously refining and updating standards to reflect the latest industry requirements.  In response to industry demands for seamless exchange of high quality data for digitalization of digital twins, SC 4 has active development in the following areas:

ISO 8000 - Data Quality

ISO 8000 - Data Quality is undergoing active development in multiple parts, strengthening and refining multiple dimensions of the standard including the following parts:

  • Part 51: Data governance: exchange of data policy statements
  • Part 65: Data quality management: Process measurement questionnaire
  • Part 66: Data quality management: Assessment indicators for data processing in manufacturing operations
  • Part 81: Data quality assessment: Profiling
  • Part 82: Data quality assessment: Creating data rules
  • Part 110: Master data: Exchange of characteristic data: Syntax, semantic encoding, and conformance to data specification

ISO 10303 - Product data representation and exchange

Known commercially as the STEP standard for product definition, ISO 10303 is undergoing active development to update major portions of the standard and incorporate industry requirements into the exchange protocol.   The following parts are in active development:

ISO 15926 - Integration of life-cycle data for process plants including oil and gas production facilities

Maturing as the go-to standard for defining major assets in oil and gas production, ISO 15926 is focused on data structures and reference data with the following updates:

  • Part 11: Methodology for simplified industrial usage of reference data

ISO 17506 - COLLADA digital asset schema specification for 3D visualization of industrial data

Available for several years as a Publically Available Specification, ISO 17506 is being updated to International Standard status with enhancements to harmonize with other visualization standards.

ISO 23247 Digital Twin manufacturing framework

In one of the most exciting areas of Industrial Data, Digital Twin is emerging as a critical enabler to the model based enterprise.  With this new standard, the data architecture for Digital Twin in a manufacturing context is defined.  As this is a new standard, all of the parts are currently in active development and are being developed as an integrated package:

  • Part 1: Overview and general principles
  • Part 2: Reference architecture
  • Part 3: Digital representation of physical manufacturing elements
  • Part 4: Information exchange

ISO 23301 - STEP Geometry Services

Another new development in Industrial Data will leverage the investment made in ISO 10303 and the extensive data exchange protocols previously developed and implemented.  Service orientation is a relatively new technology opportunity being implemented in numerous industrial settings.  With ISO 23301, the STEP data model will be exposed in a service oriented fashion to enable new implementations of STEP in the model based enterprise.

ISO 23726 Ontology based interoperability

Industry needs standards to enable exchange of data in such a way that meaning is preserved. This need for semantic interoperability goes beyond a reliance on controlled vocabulary and terms with shared attributes. Ontology based standards are the solution. Ontologies are structured vocabularies that logically define classes and relationships to enable interoperability. Formal definitions specify meaning in a way that computers can process providing semantic clarity. This semantically explicit format is key to machine interoperability and goes beyond the compact representation commonly used for quick data exchange in industry.
 
Standards in the ISO 23726 series provide controls in the building of vocabularies, modelling patterns and asset models, and the management and quality control of information models and enable automated reasoning. This ontology-centric ecosystem includes users of the ISO Standards, owners of Reference Data Libraries, providers of graph services and others involved in knowledge representation, data preparation and import, and ontology maintenance.
 
The foundation for the ISO 23726 Ontology based interoperability (OBI) set of standards is the Industrial Data Ontology (IDO). IDO is a specification of a conceptualization of the industrial data domain. IDO provides a high level of abstraction and a set of constraints which, when adhered to, allow one IDO-aligned ontology to work with another IDO-aligned ontology. This ontology alignment is necessary so that machine-readable axioms that form the basis for automated reasoning over data can be consistently interpreted and executed.

ISO 23952 - Quality information framework (QIF) — An integrated model of manufacturing quality information

In yet another exciting area of Industrial Data, ANSI has offered the Quality Information Framework to the international community via the fast track (harvesting) process.  In its current V3 within the United States, QIF provides for the interoperability of quality related data for the identification and enumeration of the product design in a quality engineering context.

ISO 24464 - Visualization elements of digital twins

In its early stage as a technical report, ISO 24464 will articulate the needed data elements for human visualization of the product design data from the point of view of digital twin.

ISO 29002 - Exchange of characteristic data

The exchange of characteristic data, such as is contained in product catalogues or libraries, is primarily based on the exchange of <concept identifier, value> pairs. The concept identifier uniquely determines the concept that gives meaning to the value. Having been in service for many years, ISO 29002 is undergoing an overall update and consolidation of multiple parts into one integrated standard.
