The work of ISO/TC 83 is organised in three Subcommittees (SCs) and 13 Working Groups (WGs), each focusing on specific types of sports and recreational equipment as well as related facilities.

Our work covers both physical (including traditional) and virtual sports (including e‑sports), and includes the standardization of training, performance and safety requirements, among others, promoting safety, performance and fairness across borders and markets.

Projects may involve the development of completely new standards or the revision and updating of existing documents, for example to take into account new materials, technologies or user practices.

Each project follows the ISO standard development process and is carried out by international experts nominated by ISO Member Bodies. Each project is assigned to a specific Working Group, which brings together experts from industry, test laboratories, research and user organisations among others.

Projects of our Subcommittees

Our projects at a glance

In ISO/TC 83, several Subcommittees focus on specific areas of sport and recreation. They bring together manufacturers, test laboratories, athletes, operators, safety experts and other stakeholders to develop practical, internationally applicable standards for equipment and facilities:

SC 4 Snowsport equipment and facilities
Develops standards for snowsport equipment helping to ensure safe and reliable products in winter environments.

SC 5 Ice hockey equipment and facility
Focuses on standards for ice hockey equipment, protective gear and facilities, supporting player safety and consistent playing conditions at all levels of the sport.

SC 6 Martial arts
Works on standards for martial arts equipment and training environments, promoting safe practice while respecting the traditions and specific requirements of different disciplines.

Projects of our Working Groups

In addition to the work of its Subcommittees, ISO/TC 83 drives progress through several Working Groups. While the Subcommittees also have their own Working Groups, the focus here is on those that operate directly under ISO/TC 83, where much of the detailed technical work happens. Here, manufacturers, test laboratories, user groups and other stakeholders collaborate to create standards.

Below is an overview of selected projects from these Working Groups, spanning physical (including traditional) and virtual sports (including e‑sports), and driving forward training, performance and safety standards for sports and recreational equipment and facilities.

Standards in Focus

Understanding how standards connect can help stakeholders select and use them appropriately.

In this part, we provide information on selected ISO/TC 83 standards and
offer additional resources –for example explanations of relationships between standards or white papers – to support their practical use.

ISO 4980: Benefit-risk assessment

Bringing Rigour and Context to Bnefit-Risk Assessment in Sport and Recreation

This white paper explains how ISO 4980 structures benefit‑risk assessment for sports and recreational facilities, activities and equipment. It highlights the specific challenges of managing risk where challenge and participation are inherent to the activity, and shows how ISO 4980 fits within established risk management practice and builds on ISO/TS 20183. It is intended for manufacturers, operators, regulators, standards developers and other stakeholders involved in the planning, design and operation of sport and recreation environments.

Summer toboggan runs

Beyond amusement rides

This white paper explains why summer toboggan runs are often incorrectly placed in the same category as roller coasters and other amusement rides, and why there are essential differences that require dedicated safety standards. It outlines the role of the ISO 19202 series and ISO/TC 83/WG 3, and is aimed at manufacturers, operators, regulators and other stakeholders involved in the design, operation and oversight of summer toboggan runs.
