Why ISO/TC 83/SC 4 matters
ISO/TC 83/SC 4 develops International Standards for requirements and test methods for products used in all forms of skiing and snowboarding – including alpine skiing, touring, cross‑country skiing, snowboarding and similar activities. It also standardizes procedures and requirements related to the rental of ski and snowboard equipment.
By defining how these products should be designed, tested and managed, SC 4 helps reduce the frequency and severity of injuries, supports consistent performance and contributes to a safer and more enjoyable experience for users at all levels, from beginners to professionals.
SC 4’s work supports manufacturers, retailers, rental services and safety organizations by providing clear, internationally recognized benchmarks for quality and safety.
How ISO/TC 83/SC 4 works
ISO/TC 83/SC 4 carries out its work through three specialized Working Groups, each focusing on a key part of ski and snowboard equipment:
Standardization of requirements and test methods for ski and snowboard boots, addressing aspects such as fit, performance and safety.
Development of standards for ski and snowboard bindings, including release characteristics, durability and safety‑related performance.
Standardization of requirements and test methods for skis and snowboards, covering construction, performance and safety aspects.
Experts in these Working Groups collaborate closely, sharing technical knowledge and practical experience. Through meetings, technical discussions and coordinated projects, they ensure that the standards remain up to date with current materials, technologies and user needs, while maintaining a strong focus on safety and reliability.
