Activities held as part of International Day of Older Persons recently saw a focus on various aspects of inclusion for older people. One area of attention was that of older people’s participation in employment. Recent data released from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has detailed the level of employment discouragement that many older people who want to work and are available to do so are experiencing.
The new figures show the Countries with the largest shares of discouraged jobseekers aged 65 years and older.
The ILO noted that the number of people 65 years and over globally is forecast to increase by 46% from 2017 to 2030 and highlighted the labour market participation needs of these older people. The data released by the ILO underscores how the needs of discouraged jobseekers in the world of work are growing, as well as their potential to contribute.
The work being undertaken in ISO TC 314 Ageing Societies focuses on the guidelines supporting an age inclusive workforce where older people are engaged and can continue to contribute. These initiatives demonstrate the importance of standardisation and can contribute to more age inclusive workplaces.
