These current times are providing massive critical challenges for ageing societies and for older people themselves. In the unprecedented global pandemic, the safety and security of older people and those who provide care, support and assistance to them is paramount. Members of ISO/TC 314 Ageing Societies have been reflecting on our previous work and reviewing the experiences across the globe in respect to this global crisis.
There is already a standard developed which covers many considerations for older persons during such times and is viewed as quality resource to consider. ISO 22395:2018 Security and resilience — Community resilience — Guidelines for supporting vulnerable persons in an emergency was developed to give guidelines for organisations to identify, involve, communicate with and support individuals who are the most vulnerable to natural and human-induced (both intentional and unintentional) emergencies.
The standard provides comprehensive guidelines for continually improving the provision of support to vulnerable persons in an emergency. It was developed for the use of any size organisation which may take lead responsibility for, or involvement in, part or all of the planning for working with vulnerable persons in an emergency.
It is covers emergency preparation, response and recovery activities, such as local, regional and national governments; statutory bodies; international and non-governmental organisations; businesses; and public and community groups.
This document is an essential tool for any organisations supporting vulnerable individuals and their needs in relation to any emergency and is significantly appropriate to consider at the time of this global crisis.
