A message from the Chairman

Happy 2022! I hope this message finds you safe, healthy, and looking forward to a great year of transition to new ways of working and collaboration on progressing the hard work of standardization in this virtual / hybrid period as the world slowly emerges from pandemic restrictions. Indeed, SC 4 is navigating this space carefully with our 83rd Plenary meeting to be held virtually the 16 - 20 May and optimistically looking forward to a full in-person 84th Plenary in late October. Hopefully, our detailed planning and contingency measures will see the return to that highly valuable, richly nuanced, in person style of consensus building that is so crucial to delivering high quality standards.

In preparation for our return to more normal operations, SC 4 is bringing back some agenda items for the 83rd Plenary including the pre-meeting orientation briefing on 2 May, the Open Technical Forum on 9 May, the Integration Forum on 10 May, and the Implementor Forum on 11 May. These are being held the week prior to the Plenary itself in order to have space available on the Plenary agenda for important updates from Working Groups, Projects, Task Forces, and Liaison's.

The committee has been quite busy since our last visit with you in November 2021. As you will see in the remainder of this newsletter, we have been quite focused on delivering value added content across all of our major work products including a major update to the ISO 10303 standard and SMRL V9, several parts to ISO 8000, and the new ISO 17506 for COLLADA.

At the SC level, we continue in our journey of continuous improvement with the retirement of Bugzilla and CVS as a configuration management / change control solution and migration to Jira/GIT hosted by ISO. This adoption of modern code base management tools and change control gives the committee a step function improvement in quality and configuration control of the component level elements across all our standards and further adoption of agile development methods.

And finally, I am delighted by the opportunity to submit use cases to the ISO SMART Standards program as one of the ISO Committees selected in the first batch for consideration. Our four use cases, along with those from select committees in ISO, will form the baseline for requirements that will feed business model development, use case prioritization, and technology pilots. It is truly an exciting time to be at the forefront of a digital transformation in the approach to standardization!

A message from the Committee Manager

I look forward to meeting with you all (virtually) during the upcoming plenary in May. It is hard to believe that this will be the fifth time we have held a fully virtual plenary. I know that we are all looking forward to the days when we can meet in person again. We are cautiously optimistic that guidance from ISO may allow in-person and/or hybrid meetings soon. As in our previous meetings, both virtual and in-person, this is sure to be a very productive event for all Working Groups holding sessions prior to the plenary. As always, please let me know if you have any items requiring my attention before, during, or after the meeting.
