Digital Twin as an Industrial Standard?

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be at the pinnacle of hype? In this case, Digital Twin is at the top of the Gartner Hype Cycle and enjoying enormous popularity at conferences, industry events, and industrial company settings. While that might sound exciting, there is a pressing need to quickly move from hype to performance with the concept and to realize the benefit that we have all been talking about. A time tested and proven method for extracting value from hype is to standardize the concept and align everyone to a common understanding and direction.

ISO/TC 184/SC 4 is the ISO Committee responsible for the standardization of content, meaning, structure, and quality management of the information required to define an engineered product at any point in its lifecycle. The committee develops standards like ISO 10303 (STEP) and ISO 8000 through a relentless focus on emerging industry needs coupled with access to experts across more than 16 national standards bodies. The committee is meeting November 3 – 8 in Marina Del Rey California and addressing key industry requirements through international standards across multiple industry segments.

So how does the Digital Twin fit into this conversation? Product data lies at the center of most conversations regarding the Digital Twin and SC 4 is leaning into the opportunity through Industry Day, the premier event for industrial data standardization where industry stakeholders and standards developers come together and align to the latest industry requirements. We are honored to have keynotes from Dr. Michael Grieves of the Florida Institute of Technology, Dr. John Dong of The Boeing Company and others from industry, government, and academia in a full day discussion on the Digital Twin and how standards factor into the opportunity. Further, we will be updating our standards roadmap with these contributions and input from industry stakeholders in a workshop format that promises to be engaging and progressive.
