What is ISO 9001?

ISO 9001 is a globally recognized standard for quality management. It helps organizations of all sizes and sectors improve their performance, meet customer expectations and demonstrate their commitment to quality. Its requirements define how to establish, implement, maintain and continually improve a quality management system (QMS).

Implementing ISO 9001 means your organization has put in place effective processes and trained staff to deliver reliable products or services time after time.

Why is ISO 9001 important?

With more than one million certificates issued to organizations in 189 countries, ISO 9001 is the most widely used quality management standard in the world.

FAQ

Any organization seeking to improve its quality management, meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and enhance customer satisfaction can use ISO 9001. The standard is suitable for organizations of all sizes and across all sectors, including manufacturing, services, healthcare, education, government and non-profit organizations. It can also be used by certification bodies and other third parties to assess an organization’s conformity with the standard’s requirements.

ISO 9001 specifies requirements for the establishment, maintenance and continual improvement of a quality management system (QMS), covering a wide range of areas, including:

  1. Context of the organization: ISO 9001 requires organizations to determine the external and internal factors that affect their ability to achieve the intended results of their QMS.
  2. Leadership: The standard emphasizes the importance of leadership in implementing and maintaining a QMS.
  3. Planning: The QMS must include measures designed to achieve an organization’s quality objectives and continually improve the system’s effectiveness.
  4. Support: ISO 9001 addresses issues such as resources, competence, awareness, communication and documented information.
  5. Operation: The processes necessary to meet customer requirements and increase customer satisfaction must be planned, implemented and controlled.
  6. Performance evaluation: The standard requires organizations to monitor, measure, analyse and evaluate the performance and effectiveness of their QMS.
  7. Improvement: ISO 9001 emphasizes the importance of continually increasing the effectiveness of the QMS based on the results of performance evaluation and other data sources.

Overall, ISO 9001 helps organizations address all aspects of managing the quality of their products and services, with an emphasis on customer satisfaction and ongoing enhancement of the QMS.

The fifth edition of ISO 9001 was published in 2015. ISO standards are reviewed periodically to ensure they remain relevant and fit for purpose. Following a global consultation in 2023, consensus was reached on the need to revise ISO 9001 to reflect evolving needs and ensure it continues to deliver value to users and their communities.

The new edition presents an opportunity to review and refine your quality management system, ensuring it aligns with updated requirements and stakeholder expectations. Certified organizations will have to transition to the new version within the time frame set by their certification cycle. For further information, they should contact their certification body.

Certification to ISO 9001 is a way of demonstrating to customers and other stakeholders that you are committed to consistently delivering high-quality products and services. Holding a certificate issued by an accredited conformity assessment body can bring an additional layer of confidence, as accreditation provides independent confirmation of the certification body’s competence.

As with other ISO management system standards, organizations implementing ISO 9001 can choose whether or not to seek certification.

Guidance on auditing a quality management system can be found on the ISO 9001 Auditing Practices Group’s website. This informal group brings together quality management system experts, auditors and practitioners from ISO’s technical committee ISO/TC 176 (quality management) and the International Accreditation Forum.

A definition of quality is part of the core vocabulary for quality management which can be found in ISO 9000:2026 and applies to all ISO quality management standards, including ISO 9001. It says that quality is the “degree to which a set of inherent characteristics of an object” – which in turn is defined as anything perceivable or conceivable, such as a product, service, process, person, organization, system or resource – “fulfils requirements”.

ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 are both International Standards for organizational management, but they serve different purposes. While ISO 9001 helps organizations improve their quality management and customer satisfaction, ISO 14001 addresses environmental management, helping organizations manage their environmental impacts and improve their environmental performance.

Like other ISO management system standards, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 share a common structure, making it easier for organizations already using a management system standard to integrate other aspects of organizational management into their existing system.

Both ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 specify requirements for a quality management system, but they differ in user group and application. ISO 9001 provides a quality management framework applicable to organizations of any size or sector, while ISO 13485 is designed specifically for the medical devices industry, with a focus on regulatory compliance.

ISO 13485 helps ensure the safety and effectiveness of medical devices by addressing key areas such as risk management, traceability and process validation. Compared to ISO 9001, it contains additional requirements specific to organizations involved in the life cycle of medical devices. Where regulatory requirements are more relevant to the sector, certain generic requirements of ISO 9001 are omitted.

In short, while ISO 9001 sets out a general framework for quality management, ISO 13485 provides specific guidance for the medical devices industry.
