Welding and brazing in aerospace - Information linked to the pandemic

During its web-meeting, held on 2020-06-11, ISO/TC 44/SC 14 "Welding and brazing in aerospace" made the following resolution with regard to the pandemic.

RESOLUTION 01/2020

ISO/TC 44/SC 14 decides to publish the following statement on extension of qualification of welding and brazing personnel during COVID-19 crisis:

WARNING: ISO/TC 44/SC 14 Welding and brazing in aerospace are reminded that this statement does not have the status of a standard and its implementation is purely voluntary. Further, it does not negate the requirements of certification bodies. The aim is to help industry where needed during the COVID-19 situation.

It is the opinion of ISO/TC 44/SC 14 that:

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the revalidation and confirmation of qualifications of joining personnel may be extended for an additional three months beyond that allowed by the ISO 24394  and ISO 11745 under the following conditions:

  • an employment interruption resulted in the requalification period having been exceeded
  • the qualification was valid at the time of the employment interruption

     - after the employment interruption a welder/welding operator/brazer/brazing operator shall weld or braze a test piece that shall be approved by the welding coordinator before processing production parts.

  • it has not been possible to revalidate and confirm qualifications due to unavailability of certification agencies/testing facilities

     - in the latter case production parts welded or brazed by the personnel shall be checked regularly by the welding coordinator.

Implementation and expiration of this statement remains at the discretion of any relevant engineering or regulatory authorities.
