ISO TR 32220 Sustainable finance – Basic concepts and key initiatives

Facilitating a common understanding of sustainable finance concepts

A large number of voluntary and regulatory sustainable finance standards are being developed by countries, regions and sectors. The stakeholders include all those participating in any location(s) in the financial ecosystem from both the supply and demand sides of the financial market. The current lack of a common language of sustainable finance hinders cross-border sustainable finance activities and cross-sector collaboration.

To harmonize understanding and language of sustainable finance, ISO/TC 322 started to convene an expert group, i.e. AHG Terminology, to develop a terminology guide document, listing selected terms in common use.

A selected term cites at least one accessible source of definition or refers to one or more reference sources to provide the context for the definition. To improve ease of use, the listed key sustainable finance concepts, initiatives and terms are grouped into five sections shown in the picture above.

The terms identified in ISO TR 32220 will be reviewed regularly to follow new achievements and trends in global sustainable finance practices. New terms and definitions with the qualified reference sources can be proposed through ISO/TC 322 website (https://committee.iso.org/home/tc322) or directly to AHG Convenor and Secretary.
