Bringing Clarity to Confusion – ISO 14100
Over the last few years, there has been an explosion of terms dealing with green finance. This is especially true when it comes to financing projects, assets and activities that face climate related risks and opportunities. ISO 14100 Guidance on environmental criteria for projects, assets and activities to support the development of green finance provides clarity to these terms as well as international insight into green finance.
This guidance focuses on variety of stakeholders. Intended uses include both borrowers and financiers, large public companies and small to medium size private companies, project developers as well as risk and investment managers.
According to Phil Ludvigsen chair of ISO/TC 207/SC 4 Environmental Performance Evaluation: “Beside clarifying confusing terms such as ‘double materiality,’ ISO 14100 provides value to a variety of stakeholders. The standard identifies criteria for determining environmental aspects and impacts that should be considered when doing green financing deals. More importantly, it describes methods for assessing these attributes and how to deal head on with ‘greenwashing.’ Anyone interested in the “E” of ESG investing should get to know this standard.”
This work was carried out as a joint working group with experts drawn from ISO/TC 207/SC 4 Environmental Performance Evaluation and ISO/TC 322.
