Reference: ISO/DIS 21520 |PPPM AI Concepts, Applications and Implications | Committee: ISO/TC 258/WG 17 |  ISO Stage 40: Enquiry |  5 July – 27 September 2026

Project, programme and portfolio management — Artificial intelligence — Concepts, applications, and implications can now be accessed by all ISO members during open comment period.

ISO/TC 258 is pleased to announce that ISO/DIS 21520, Project, programme and portfolio management — Artificial intelligence — Concepts, applications, and implications, has advanced to the Enquiry Stage (Stage 40) and is now open for ballot and comment.

As organizations increasingly adopt artificial intelligence to support project, programme, and portfolio management (PPPM), the need for internationally recognized guidance has never been greater. ISO/DIS 21520 provides a comprehensive framework to help organizations understand AI concepts, evaluate practical applications, and address the governance, ethical, and operational implications of integrating AI into PPPM practices.

The proposed standard is designed to complement the existing ISO/TC 258 portfolio of standards by providing guidance on the responsible adoption and use of AI throughout the project, programme, and portfolio lifecycle. It addresses key considerations including AI governance, benefits and risks, security, privacy, transparency, bias, and data governance, enabling organizations to make informed decisions while fostering trust and accountability. The guidance is applicable to organizations of all sizes and sectors, regardless of project complexity, delivery approach, or lifecycle model.

Advancing to the Enquiry Stage represents a significant milestone in the development of this new International Standard. At this stage, ISO member bodies are invited to vote on the draft and submit technical comments that will help refine the document before it progresses toward publication as an International Standard.

ISO/TC 258 encourages all participating members to review the draft carefully and engage with their national mirror committees throughout the ballot period. Feedback received during the Enquiry Stage is essential to ensuring the standard reflects international best practices and provides practical, globally relevant guidance for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in project, programme, and portfolio management.

The ballot and comment period closes on 27 September 2026.
