ISO/TC 258 Establishes New Working Group on PPPM Competency Framework

A new Working Group under ISO/TC 258 is set to define a competency framework for project, programme, and portfolio management professionals, led by Ms. Ma Na from SAC/China.

ISO/TC 258 is pleased to announce the re-establishment of Working Group 8 (WG 8), focused on the development of a Project, Programme, and Portfolio Management (PPPM) Competency Framework for Professionals.

WG 8 will be led by Ms. Ma Na, representing SAC/China, who has been appointed as Convenor of the new Working Group. The creation of WG 8 reflects ISO/TC 258’s continued commitment to supporting the professional development of practitioners and strengthening capability and consistency in PPPM practices globally.

The approved new Project ISO/NP 21515 is focused on introducing a PPPM competency framework that will aim to provide structured guidance on the knowledge, skills, and competencies required by professionals working across project, programme, and portfolio management contexts. The work will complement existing ISO/TC 258 standards and deliverables by supporting organizations, practitioners, and other stakeholders in capability development, assessment, and continuous improvement.

Earlier efforts in 2016-2019 to develop a standard addressing competencies for project, programme, and portfolio management were initiated but ultimately set aside. The committee recognized the need to first conduct broader research into the evolving project environment and to establish foundational standards covering key aspects of project, programme, and portfolio management. This foundational work provided the essential context, terminology, and guidance upon which the new competency framework will now build, ensuring alignment with the committee’s broader standardization strategy and the practical needs of practitioners worldwide.

ISO/TC 258 welcomes the re-establishment of WG 8 and looks forward to the contributions of its experts under Ms. Ma Na’s leadership. The committee encourages interested members to follow the progress of this important work as it develops.

Interested experts are invited to participate and contribute to the development of this proposed new standard by registering through their respective National Standards Bodies or liaison organizations.
