The Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange (SDMX) standard provides a common framework for describing, exchanging, and sharing statistical data and metadata in a structured, machine-readable way.  Developed by eight international organisations — BIS, ECB, Eurostat, IMF, OECD, UN, World Bank, and the ILO — SDMX is now an ISO standard used globally to support the production and exchange of official statistics.

This webinar introduced the SDMX Information Model, covering key components such as Concepts, Codelists, and Data Structures.  It also presented the SDMX API, which provides a standard interface for data access and exchange, and the suite of open-source tools that support the creation, publication, and use of SDMX artefacts.

The session was designed for participants new to SDMX who wish to understand its foundations, benefits, and practical applications.

Bios:

Matthew Nelson – Mr. Nelson is a software developer and business analyst at the Bank for International Settlements.  He has developed SDMX software since 2007 as the principal architect on SDMXSource open source libraries, Fusion Metadata Registry (Fusion Metadata Registry · sdmx.io), and URN resolution service (urn.sdmx.io). He has provided SDMX training courses to numerous central banks, statistical agencies, and international organisations. He is currently the chair of the SDMX Technical Working Group (TWG) which supports the maintenance, clarification and practical implementation of ISO 17369 (SDMX).

Abdulla Gozalov – Mr. Gozalov is a statistician in the Statistics Division of the United Nations. He has designed numerous statistical information systems, and more recently has focused on data and metadata exchange and dissemination as well as capacity development at National Statistical Offices. He is the Statistics Division’s focal point on SDMX, a member of the UN Secretariat, and coordinator of the Working Group on SDMX for Sustainable Development Goals indicators. He manages the Statistics Division’s Regular Programme on Technical Cooperation and leads a number of SDMX-related initiatives including the SDMX Business Case Task Team.

Jim Northey – Mr. Northey serves as the CTO of CalcGuard Technologies, Inc., an industry consortium for capital markets order routing transparency, analytics, and execution quality. He was a Senior Vice President of Strategic Research focusing on Protocol Engineering and Standards at Itiviti Group AB, following acquisition of The LaSalle Technology Group, LLC in 2015, which he co-founded in 2006.

Mr. Northey is in his third term as the Chair of the International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee 68 (ISO/TC 68), Financial services. He is a non-executive director of FIX Protocol Ltd. Jim served as the Global Technical Committee Co-chair for the Americas Region until his election as an FPL director. Mr. Northey is a past member of the Financial Research Advisory Committee of the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Financial Research; he is also a past member of the Subcommittee on High Frequency Trading of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Technology Advisory Committee. Mr. Northey previously served in the roles of FIX Americas Region Co-chair and FIX Global Derivatives Committee Co-Chair. He was awarded the FIA Annual Achievement award in 2006 as part of the team that created FIXML for listed derivatives clearing standardization.

Mr. Northey holds a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Indianapolis and an M.S. in Financial Markets and Trading from Illinois Institute of Technology. He is an adjunct instructor of Finance at Michigan Technological University where he teaches courses on derivatives, financial engineering, and financial technology. He serves on the board of the Keweenaw Financial Corporation and Superior National Bank in Michigan and is on the board of advisors for Esprow Pte. Ltd., Distributed Energy Storage Ltd, and V2G Limited. Outside of the financial services industry, Mr. Northey serves as a director of the Copper Country Angel Mission and CopperDog, Inc. nonprofits.
