ISO TR 4340 – Understanding the interaction between ductile iron pipelines and the water it conveys

Lakes, rivers, underground water...... we have many sources for the water we need. In our natural environments, the character of water will differ from place to place. In addition, human activity can cause the quality of water to change over time. To address those differing characteristics, cement mortar and organic linings for ductile iron pipelines provide the best solutions for the water we need to survive.

Water characteristics vary around the world. Certain measures can be taken to ensure we obtain the long service lives we have come to expect from our ductile iron pipelines. Ductile iron pipelines have long been recognized as the most favorable for water supply infrastructures, so it is important to understand how the water we convey might interact with the pipelines we design and install.

Internal linings are closely related to local water quality requirements and health regulations and certifications. Comprehensive considerations are necessary to understand the best solutions for internal linings for ductile iron pipelines.

Thus, ISO TR 4340, the first technical report of SC2 has been published. This report provides several indices that describe how differing water characteristics can impact the life of our pipelines and provides guidance in collecting the information about the properties of the water we need. These are important references that help give us confidence that we can continue to rely on ductile pipelines.
