The scope of ISO/TC 338 includes all manufactured menstrual products intended for collecting or absorbing menstrual fluid during the menstrual cycle. This includes products for internal and external use as well as single- and multiple-use products.

Examples of products include single and multiple use menstrual pads, tampons, panty liners, menstrual underwear, menstrual cups, menstrual discs, sponges etc.

The first standard for menstrual products is currently being developed within WG 1 Safety, performance and general requirements of menstrual products, the scope of the working draft is as follows

"This document specifies general and safety requirements for menstrual products from a user perspective and covers internally and externally used products intended for single and multiple use".

WG 2 Terminology is developing a vocabulary standard that defines terms related to menstrual products.
