Q&A
This column provide standard Q&As to give people general understanding of TC279 standards.
Q: What is ISO 56008?
A: The full title of ISO 56008 is Innovation management — Tools and methods for innovation operation measurements — Guidance. It is an international standards to guide all types of organizations and interesed parties on the design and implementation of measurements in managing their innovation activities. This document helps organizations think, design, implement, measure and take actions based on measurement results in order to reduce uncertainties, manage risks better, avoid waste and ensure achieving value when and where it counts in the market and society at large.
Q: Who and How was it developed?
A: ISO 56008 has been developed by ISO/TC279/WG3, the tools and methods working group of Innovation management technical committee of International Organization for Standardization, with contributions from over 50 leading experts from more than 21 countries. The project was approved in 2021, after 3 years developing, the standard was published in April of 2024.
Q: Why it is important?
A: SO 56008 is important for an organization innovation operation, because an organization's ability to innovate is recognized as a key factor for sustainability, competitiveness, economic success, increased well-being, and the development of society. However, it is well known that one cannot manage what one does not understand and measure. At the same time, it is important to understand that not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. ISO 56008 guides innovation managers on how to think about their innovation issues, how to select the right metrics for measurement, how to implement the measurements, how to present the results and, most importantly, how to make judicious decisions and apply corrective action when needed.
Q: What's the Benefits of Implementing Innovation Operation Measurements?
A: The benefits of implementing a systematic approach to measuring innovation operations involve the following:
• strategic positioning to focus the efforts and innovation resources on the desired outcomes while optimizing opportunities versus risk;
• enabling an evidence-based decision-making process for determining innovation operational issues, along with their progress, results, and outcomes;
• ensuring adequate and timely resource allocation for innovation operations;
• monitoring the expected progress of innovation operations and adjusting them in time for meeting objectives efficiently;
• generating needed evidence to manage innovation processes for go/no-go/pivot/refine decisions to advance innovation activities concretely;
• ensuring that innovation operations management is relevant, ethical, effective, and efficient;
• nourishing an innovation (entrepreneurial) culture that targets value creation, rewards and recognizes innovators;
• providing reliable, relevant and useful data on value creation opportunities for attracting investments and the engagement of interested parties;
• ensuring that the innovation results contribute to value creation and the intended impacts of the organization's Innovation Management System (IMS).
Q: What's the relationship between ISO 56008 and ISO 56001?
A: ISO 56001 is an international standard for innovation management systems. The standard specifies the requirements for implementing and continually improving a management system for innovation efforts in an organization. ISO 56008 introduce the tool and method for measuring innovation activities and operations in organizations, guiding organizations think, design, implement, measure and take actions based on measurement result. ISO 56008 can support the innovation management system running effectively, efficiently, and timely to achieve value objectives.
