ISO in the Global Climate Action Agenda

From background infrastructure to recognized implementation tools

The Global Climate Action Agenda brings governments and non-Party stakeholders together to accelerate implementation of the Paris Agreement. Its Plans to Accelerate Solutions identify the practical barriers that need to be addressed to scale climate solutions – including standards, regulation, finance, technology and capacity building.

International Standards are increasingly being recognized as part of the practical implementation tools needed to turn climate commitments into action.

At COP30, 63% of the 117 Plans to Accelerate Solutions identified the maturity of standards as a critical lever for unlocking progress.

Building on this momentum, ISO is engaging across the COP31 Action Agenda to help strengthen the common frameworks, methodologies and tools needed for credible and coordinated climate action.

Hosting a Plan to Accelerate Solutions

Harmonizing global carbon accounting

ISO has a direct role in delivering the Global Climate Action Agenda. Together, ISO and GHG Protocol are the host initiative for the Plan to Harmonize Global Carbon Accounting Standards, under the objective to harmonize carbon markets and carbon accounting standards.

The partnership is working towards a more coherent global system for greenhouse gas measurement and reporting across corporate, product and project levels, helping reduce fragmentation and strengthen the comparability and credibility of emissions data.

Supporting implementation across other plans

Beyond carbon accounting, ISO is already supporting other Plans to Accelerate Solutions, including net-zero transition planning for financial institutions, renewable and low-emissions hydrogen, and sustainable finance.

Through COP31 and towards the next Global Stocktake in 2028, ISO will continue working with partners to put standards to work as practical tools for credible, measurable climate action.

Food loss & waste

Moving from measurement to action on food loss and waste.

Recently published, ISO 20001 provides organizations across the food supply chain with a practical management system to measure and monitor food loss and waste, identify its causes and take systematic action to prevent and reduce it.

Net zero

Turning net-zero commitments into credible action.

International Standards can provide common frameworks and methodologies to support organizations on the path to net zero, helping them move from commitments towards credible planning, implementation, measurement and progress.
