What is the Sharing Economy?

The Sharing Economy is an economic model where platforms enable providers and users to exchange products and assets. It seeks to bring under-utilized resources to market and supports 7 United Nations’ Sustainability Goals by brokering an exchange of resources.

What we do?

We develop standards to promote and grow the Sharing Economy worldwide. In 2021, we published the International Standard Sharing economy — General principles (ISO 42500:2021). This articulates the key concepts and overarching principles that apply to all applications of the Sharing Economy.

In 2022, we published Sharing economy — General trustworthiness and safety requirements for digital platforms (ISO/TS 42501:2022) and Sharing economy — Guidance for provider verification on digital platforms (ISO/TS 42502:2022) which aim to protect users, providers and platforms.

 

In 2025, we published two technical reports, including Sharing economy — Illustrative examples of provider verification on digital platforms (ISO/TR 42504:2025) and Sharing economy — Use cases of sharing economy platforms in the public sector (ISO/TR 42507:2025). The former provides illustrative verification examples to support the implementation of ISO/TS 42502:2022 for platform operators and stakeholders, while the latter offers public sector use cases to help administrations adopt sharing economy models and improve public service efficiency.

 

Who we are?

Technical Committee 324 (TC 324) is the official group of Sharing Economy experts who develop global standards for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).  Our members include Sharing Economy businesses, academics, NGOs, national standards bodies, and government agencies. We are dedicated to promoting the Sharing Economy and thereby advancing UN Sustainable Development Goals through worldwide standards.
