ISO/TC67/SC4 is an active subcommittee in ISO/TC67 that manages standards for drilling, production and injection equipment used in the oil and gas industries, including lower carbon energy.

Latest news
ISO TC67/SC4 recently convened virtually April 9-10, 2025. During the meeting, we heard updates from the workgroup convenors regarding their ongoing projects and progress. We also reviewed several new standard proposals and confirmed the appointment of a new convenor for WG2. The next plenary session is scheduled to be a hybrid meeting in Geoje, South Korea on October 20, 2025. We encourage individuals interested in contributing to the development of international standards to connect with their national standards bodies and consider volunteering for one of SC4’s workgroups.

Structure
SC4 is organized into seven working groups (WGs), each responsible for managing a specific portfolio of standards. Each WG is led by a convenor, who is appointed for a three-year term. The primary duties of the convenors include reviewing and approving draft standards before they are sent to member countries for voting, as well as addressing feedback received during the voting process. Convenors are also responsible for the ongoing maintenance of published standards and may recommend their revision or withdrawal when necessary.
The SC4 working groups and their convenors are as follows:
WG1 – Drilling Equipment: This group oversees standards related to drilling equipment, including hoisting equipment, rig structures, top drives, mud pumps, and powered elevators. The current convenor is Chen Gang (SAC).
WG2 – Drilling Well Control Equipment: This group focuses on well control equipment, such as blow-out preventers and shallow gas diverters. The current convenor is Nic Arteaga (ANSI).
WG3 – Wellhead and Tree Equipment: This group is responsible for standards related to surface trees, valves, and wellheads. The current convenor is Matteo Zorloni (UNI).
WG4 – Production Equipment: This group handles standards for production equipment, including surface pumping equipment, sucker rod equipment, artificial lift equipment, subsurface safety valves, and downhole completion equipment. The current convenor is Sun Liangwei (SAC).
WG6 – Subsea Equipment: This group oversees standards for subsea production systems, including wellheads, trees, umbilicals, riser systems, flexible pipes, and manifolds. The current convenor is Matthew Green (ANSI).
WG8 – Modular Drilling Rigs: This group focuses on standards for modular drilling rigs, including offshore conductors. The current convenor is Yang Xiangqian (SAC).
WG9 – Water Injection Equipment: This group is responsible for developing and maintaining standards for water injection equipment such as a water distribution tool. The current convenor is Xiaoyu Xu (SAC).
Work programme
The SC4 work programme is dynamic and evolves regularly based on the progress of standards actions. The ISO website contains information on the current standards in process.
