As companies move toward a cleaner energy future, unified international standards will be a critical component for achieving business success through improved environmental stewardship.
Two things have hindered progress: companies developing their own corporate specifications and duplicated and competing standards with gaps making it difficult to apply them. Global standards management and collaborative industry efforts can solve these interrelated challenges, but this requires a shift from seeing standards as a differentiator to recognizing them as foundational for safe, reliable, cost effective and sustainable operations.
Unified standards will help futureproof the offshore industry, providing the next generation of leadership and engineers with tools that help lower greenhouse gas emissions and provide a framework for innovation. The solution requires fit-for-future business aligned standards with concise and unambiguous technical/operational requirements and guidance. These must be a library of visible and easily accessible standards that can be adapted to business needs. The global standardization is managed by ISO/TC67 as an international standardization organization with its national standards bodies (NSB) and liaisons with industry stakeholders like the IOGP's Standards Committee. During this session, attendees will be shown how standards development organizations (e.g., ANSI/API) and operators are working together to build on the success of standards implementation to promote change, learn about the challenges that remain ahead and how cooperation will help transfer knowledge.
