The idea to organize this event originates from working group member Nils-Martin Skaanes, leading advisor for the Equinor management system. He proposed organizing an experience session on operating management systems among oil and gas operators and other stakeholders to raise awareness about the future ISO 29010. This new ISO document provides specific requirements and guidance for organizations in the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries to develop standardized and consistent operating processes to manage risks and opportunities and improve operating performance.
The ‘Management system days’ were introduced by Magne Frantsen on behalf of the host Equinor and by Ted Fletcher, convenor of ISO/TC 67/WG 2. Alice Bellan and Nils-Martin Skaanes were the first speakers, who provided a duo presentation about the Equinor management system (see presentation 01). Then it was time to introduce the future ISO 29010 to the audience. Ted Fletcher presented the context and development strategy of this document (see presentation 02). He advised that this ISO document will soon be available for public consultation. During the first day, also the Woodside management system was presented by James Foo (see presentation 03). The first day was concluded by an animated discussion, also making use of Menti to poll the view among the audience about particular topics, like the perception and expectation of an operating management system and the potential benefits. Concerning benefits, there was consensus that an operating management system will increase the understanding of risks and opportunities as well as improve stakeholders engagement and internal & external communication, and support better performance evaluation & benchmarking between companies.
Presentation BP on operating management system
The second day of the ‘Management system days’ continued with presentations about the journey of more companies that are in the process of implementing an operating management system and dealing with culture changes. Stephen Heath (see presentation 04) kicked off by explaining the approach applied by BP in implementing their operating management system. Arjen Pos followed by illustrating the Neptune Energy management system including an informative animation demonstrating the improvement cycle (see presentation 05). Siri Nesbø of Spirit Energy showed their process-based management system and sharing their recommendations (see presentation 06).
An operating management system is informed by other functional standards, (industry) standards and guidelines. This was demonstrated by Runar Østebø, convenor of ISO/TC 67/WG 4 ‘Reliability engineering and technology‘, who linked their standards on reliability engineering and management to an operating management system (see presentation 07). The last company presentation was provided by Bernt Gjellestad of Aker Solution, who explained how a large service provider to the energy sector implements a management system being compatible with the ones of its customers, also by adhering to the line of sight.
MS days audience
Overall, the two days offered great opportunity for inspiration, sharing and networking among peers. The organization team received very good feedback. So, this kind of days are definitely needed to learn from successes, failures and best practices to drive improvement by managing risks and opportunities, and enhancing performance. ISO/TC 67/WG 2 will consider organizing more of this kind of sessions to engage stakeholders in developing and implementing the standards under the responsibility of this working group. Other ISO/TC 67 working groups are encouraged to organize similar activities to reach out to their stakeholders.
