China is proposing to establish a new subcommittee on ceilings and walling. The proposal is under ballot in ISO/TC 59 until 12 February.
Proposal from China
China (SAC) is proposing to establish a new subcommittee under ISO/TC 59 to develop a set of standards in the ceiling and wall area. With this, they hope to establish a global standard system with solutions for competitive technology and future innovation that can be used or referenced in technical regulations of various countries and that can support the international trade and circulation of ceiling and wall products.
The proposers think this can help eliminate trade barriers, improve international market access, support public procurement, improve business efficiency of various enterprises, including small and medium-sized enterprises, and facilitate compliance with international and regional regulations and rules/practices.
It is also intended that the new SC will track and assess the impact of published standards over time in terms of technical, economic, social and environmental benefits, taking the interests of all parties into account. If approved, SAC will undertake the secretariat.
Proposed scope
Subcommittees are designated in sequence in the order in which they are established, so this proposed new subcommittee will be number 19. The proposed scope of the new SC 19 "Ceilings and walling" is as follows:
Standardization of prefabricated integrated ceilings and walling for buildings,
including:
- general terminology;
- performance specifications;
- test methods;
- design;
- assembly and installation;
- quality acceptance criteria; and
- maintenance.
Excluded:
- fire resistance tests; and
- sound insulation tests.
Proposed initial work programme
The proposed programme of work to start with, is as follows:
- Terminology standards for ceilings and wall products (including integrated ceilings and integrated walling)
- Product standards and performance test methods for ceiling and walling panels
- Product standards and performance test methods of ceiling and walling decoration systems
- Product standards and performance test methods for accessories (furring, suspender, edge banding, etc.)
- Standards for general and special design and technical installation specifications for ceiling and walling products
- General technical safety requirements, application and maintenance specifications and durability requirements of ceiling and walling products
- Special technical safety requirements, application and maintenance specifications and durability requirements of ceiling and walling products
Approval criteria
Approval of the proposal requires
- a 2/3 majority decision of the P-members of the parent committee voting;
- that at least 5 members of the parent TC have expressed their intention to participate actively in the work of the subcommittee; and
- ratification by ISO's technical management board, ISO/TMB.
