New project for assessing the environmental performance of civil engineering works

A new project has been approved under the umbrella of SC 17 "Sustainability in buildings and civil engineering works". The new project will become a tool that can be used to improve the environmental performance of civil engineering works. 

The ability to measure and understand the environmental performance of buildings and civil engineering works is essential for communicating their potential environmental impacts and their influence on sustainable development.

The new project, ISO/NP 21931-2 "Sustainability in building construction - Framework for methods of assessment of the sustainability performance of construction works - Part 2 - Civil engineering works" will complement the existing Part 1, which concerns buildings. Together the two will provide general frameworks for improving the quality and comparability of methods for assessing the environmental performance of buildings and civil engineering works. Such assessments can be used for benchmarking performance and monitoring progress towards improvement of performance.

The new Part 2 will identify and describe issues to be taken into account in the use and development of methods of assessment of the sustainable performance for all types of civil engineering works, both new and existing. The standard will be relevant for the assessment of the environmental, social and economic performance of new civil engineering works over their entire life cycle, and of existing civil engineering works over their remaining service life and end of life stage.

The new standard will be developed in SC 17's Working Group 5 "Civil engineering", which is lead by Spain.
