Revision of ISO 30301 Management systems for records -  Requirements

High Level Structure

ISO standards are subject to a process of systematic review every five years. Accordingly ISO/TC 46/SC 11 has started the revision of ISO 30301 Management system for records - Requirements.  The revision is based on:

ISO 30301(2011) as a Type A Management System Standard (MSS),  which includes requirements. Since 2012, the ISO MSS Type A standards must follow the structure, core text and definitions known as “High Level Structure - HLS” published in Annex SL of ISO/IEC Directives Part 1 and Consolidated ISO Supplement. This mandate applies for all new MSS and will be incorporated into the revision of all existing MSS's. ISO 30301 was drafted at the same time as the HLS, and is recognized as one of the early adopters. However after its publication in 2011 some changes, mainly in wording, were introduce in the HLS, so now the text needs to be revised against the HLS.

Specific requirements for the Management System for Records (MSR) are mainly in clause 8 Operation and the normative Annex A. They were linked to the structure and guidelines of the 2001 edition of ISO 15489 Records Management. In 2016 a new edition of ISO 15489 was published, hence a revision of ISO 30301 also needs to take this into account.

The maximum planned timeframe for the revision of ISO 30301 is 24 months, so a new version is expected late 2018 or early 2019.
