ISO TC334 Holds its inaugural Plenary Meeting

Inaugural Plenary meeting  - 7/8 September 2021

1ST MEETING OF ISO/TC 334 REFERENCE MATERIALS

7 - 8 September 2021 (12:00 - 15:00 GMT+2)

Dr Angelique Botha opened the meeting on Zoom and welcomed the 70+ delegates to this first meeting of ISO/TC 334.

The following content of this news item details the key discussions and resulting agreements from the meeting.

The Title and scope for TC 334, as proposed by ISO TMB and agreed on is:

ISO/TC 334 REFERENCE MATERIALS”

Scope:   Standardization in the competent production and use of reference

materials, including the concepts, terms and definitions related to

               reference materials.

The Committee agreed to the ISO TMB mandate to transform all ISO/REMCO Guides into other ISO deliverables, namely International Standards. However, the details of the process that will be followed for the transformation of the Guides has not yet been finalised by the committee.  These decisions will be taken at the next meeting scheduled for 16 November 2021.

  • ISO Guide 31:2015 Reference materials — Contents of certificates, labels and accompanying documentation,
  • ISO Guide 33:2015 Reference materials — Good practice in using reference materials,
  • ISO Guide 35:2017 Reference materials — Good practice in using reference materials,
  • ISO Guide 80:2014 Guidance for the in-house preparation of quality control materials (QCMs).

The current new work items of the committee (transferred from ISO/REMCO) that were planned as Guides will also be converted into International Standards. These projects are planned to be completed within the ISO timeframe of 36 months.

  • ISO/AWI Guide 30 Reference materials — Selected terms and definitions,
  • ISO/WD Guide 85 Guidance for the production of reference materials having one or more assigned qualitative property values,
  • ISO/WD Guide 86.2 Guidance for pure reference materials for small organic molecules,
  • ISO/AWI Guide 87 Guidance for 'pure' reference materials for metals and metalloids.

As a required restructuring activity, the committee also agreed to transform the working groups that have on-going activities in the areas of Information Services and Liaison Coordination into advisory groups.

Related to the above activities, the committee is dedicated to continuing to strengthen the horizontal relationships with other ISO technical committees as well as external organisations as well as the establishment of new relationships of mutual benefit as required.

The next ISO/TC 334 meeting to be held on the 16 November 2021.
