"We need to strengthen the influence of cooperations among the industry, academic institutions and universities on the international standardisation of bamboo and rattan in order to push standard-setting forward effectively." Dr. Benhua FEI, the chairperson of ISO/TC 296 Bamboo and Rattan, made an opening speech at the 1st ISO/TC 296 China District Annual Experts Meeting on 25th November 2019.

He also appreciated experts' hardworking for developing international standard before and has been willing to provide supports and give attention to the next step on international standardisation work.

This meeting, which was hosted by the Committee Manager Dr. Changhua FANG, provided a chance for those experts, especially project leaders from the first three working groups, who are in charge of three China-led projects, discussing and communicating with each other. To be specific, they made presentations respectively about the progress of standard projects and difficulties they met, such as few resources and platforms can be used to widely collect suggestions about international standardisation work from the domestic professionals; published standards may not be practical and meet the need of trade and business markets without participations of industry firms during the process of developing standard.

Professor Xuhe CHEN and Ge WANG, who are well-experienced in standardisation work and the area of bamboo and rattan, briefly gave three suggestions to help things done better: 1) build a working meeting system for Chinese experts in order to hold seminars or meetings related to standardisation work in a regular basis; 2) emphasis on solid supports from valid experiment statistics during the standard-developing process so that the preciseness can be improved; 3)value the applicability and feasibility when proposing a new international standard project from an international perspective such as clarify the need of international trade market and other members' intention of participating in the new project of ISO/TC 296.

This meeting plays an important role in effectively promoting a faster progress of international standardisation work, raise the standardisation awareness of top companies in bamboo and rattan industry, strengthen the bond among Chinese experts and make the working direction of ISO/TC 296 clearer.

The 1st China District Annual Experts Meeting of ISO/TC 296 was held in the college of forestry and gardening, Anhui Agriculture University, Heifei, the capital city of Anhui. There are 30 delegates attended this meeting including delegates who  represent industry firms.
