Learning measurements, metrics and evaluation
Valerie Anderson, convener of the ISO Working Group involved in developing an international standard for learning and development, joined leading Education and Training specialists from the British Army at their Annual Conference on 4thOctober. She shared her work on the Value of Learning and discussed the dilemmas and opportunities for effective learning evaluation. Key issues emerging from the debates were the need for evidence based practice; transparency and accountability; rigorous attention to what really matters; and the development of coherent and consistent measures.
This is where standardization comes in – a key feature of the work of the ISO Learning and Development working group is to develop metrics that practitioners can use to measure what matters and achieve meaningful comparison and analysis of change over time resulting from learning processes and outcomes. It is early days but the group is working hard to refine this work and launch a user-friendly, robust and relevant standard for Learning and Development.
