ISO/TC207/SC4/WG4 held a workshop with the intent to assess the perceived feasibility and necessity among international experts with regards to harmonizing how different systems analytical scopes are set when quantifying the environmental performance for different situations, purposes and applications.
The workshop was arranged by Swedish standards body SIS, and was facilitated by the Swedish experts Bengt Steen of Chalmers University of Technology and Raul Carlsson of Research Institutes of Sweden.
The workshop was attended by 34 experts from different subcommittees of TC207. The presentations given during the workshop exemplified the many choices of different scope setting parameters, such as choice of technical system boundaries, choice of time perspectives, choice of environmental impact categories and end points, and choice of social viewpoints, stakeholders, and of monetary valuation of future costs. The presentations also expressed a necessity to achieve such harmonization of scopes for the use of environmental systems analytical results for a growing environmental awareness among decision makers and for new application areas such as circular economy (TC323) and sustainable finance (TC322).
The many discussions raised by the many experts in the audience highlighted a common awareness of the value of such a harmonization, the many obstacles to expect if striving to achieve it, and also many discussions of clarification with regards to content and form of such a harmonization. The Swedish experts expressed their thankfulness to all workshop participants for their valuable input, and withdrew to assess the result and decide on how to continue their work.
