Environmental Technology Verification will be an exciting new standard for industry as it provides the procedures for objective, evidence-based evaluation of claims for environmental technology performance.
The new Environmental Technology Verification standard, ISO 14034, was distributed as a Draft International Standard (DIS) on 8 June 2015 for comments and ballot for a period of three months. The closing date for comments will be 8 September 2015.
This ISO/ETV standard could provide a baseline for independent evaluation of environmental technology performance; focus the best advances in upstream innovation; and support and bring still newer technologies to market more rapidly. Downstream, the ISO/ETV standard could create opportunities for increasing the visibility and value of new products and services associated with these technologies.
Markets for environmental goods and services today are global, and not limited to countries with ETV programs. A central need is to create better access to credible, reliable, competent and fair verification of the actual performance of technologies. This standard is expected to facilitate and lead to significant advancement of environmental technologies, and expansion of benefits to all geographies.
What this means is that countries currently with no ETV programs can be enabled to have access to an international (ISO) ETV regime for their use at a time of their own choosing. It is recognized that some countries may be hesitant or unclear and may currently lack tools to evaluate, acquire and benefit from environmental technologies. The provision of this new ETV may be best suited to the circumstances of these countries, and could enhance their ability and interest to absorb new technologies for environmental improvement at equivalent or assured levels of risk.
The working group (WG5) preparing the standard will meet in New Delhi, 4-12 September 2015, so get your comments in early for their deliberations.
